Fundadores do Instituto Terra, Lélia Wanick e Sebastião Salgado recebem prêmio da WWF-Brasil
AA WWF-Brasil, conceituada organização não-governamental brasileira dedicada à conservação da natureza, concedeu a terceira edição do seu Prêmio Personalidade Ambiental ao casal Lélia Wanick e Sebastião Salgado, fundadores do Instituto Terra.
Segundo apontou a WWF-Brasil, a promoção da restauração da Mata Atlântica, da conservação e uso equilibrado do meio ambiente, a formação profissional, evitando o êxodo e trazendo de volta os habitantes que foram obrigados a migrar, são algumas das iniciativas que estabeleceram o Instituto Terra como um centro de excelência nas áreas de recuperação e educação ambiental, desenvolvimento sustentável e mobilização social, motivando a premiação.
“Ficamos muito felizes com esse prêmio, que não é apenas nosso, mas de toda a equipe do Instituto Terra. A Lélia é a principal gestora dessa iniciativa, e eu ajudo na captação de recursos”, afirmou Sebastião Salgado, destacando que um dos diferenciais do Instituto Terra é justamente ser uma instituição que trabalha diretamente na implementação de projetos no campo. “Acredito que fazemos um dos mais interessantes trabalhos de conservação no Brasil, promovendo não apenas a consciência ecológica, mas a transformação na vida das pessoas, formando professores, alunos, técnicos agrícolas, gestores públicos, gerando promoção social e renda em nosso entorno”.
Os fundadores destacam ainda algumas iniciativas inovadoras da organização ambiental, como o laboratório de sementes e o viveiro de mudas, que produz atualmente 1,2 milhão de plantas de mais de 350 espécies nativas da Mata Atlântica. “Queremos chegar a 5 milhões de mudas, numa área de 10 hectares, em regime sazonal (novembro a janeiro), e ser uma referência botânica online”.
Com parcerias de governos do Estado de Minas e Espírito Santo, o Instituto é financiado por empresas, doações de pessoas físicas, jurídicas e de fundações internacionais. Conta hoje com 130 funcionários e tem capacidade para receber 125 alunos-residentes.
O prêmio – Entregue a cada dois anos, o Prêmio WWF-Brasil Personalidade Ambiental é concedido a uma pessoa reconhecida por seu trabalho pela conservação da natureza e pela promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável no nosso país. A primeira edição do prêmio foi entregue a então ministra do Meio Ambiente, Marina Silva. Em 2010, foi a vez do climatologista Carlos Nobre, coordenador do Centro de Ciência do Sistema Terrestre do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), integrante do Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC) e atual secretário de Políticas e Programas de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia.
O Instituto Terra – Associação civil, sem fins lucrativos, fundada em 1998, o Instituto Terra atua na restauração ecossistêmica, produção de mudas nativas, extensão ambiental, pesquisa científica aplicada e educação ambiental, na região do Vale do Rio Doce, entre os estados de Minas Gerais e Espírito Santo, Brasil. Está sediado na Fazenda Bulcão, em Aimorés (MG), numa área de 676 ha reconhecida como Reserva Particular de Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) – o título conserva seu ineditismo por se tratar da primeira RPPN criada em uma área degradada, com o propósito de vir a ser reflorestada.
Em 14 anos o Instituto Terra já capacitou mais de 60 mil pessoas, de 176 municípios, entre agricultores, professores, alunos, técnicos ambientais e lideranças comunitárias.
