Visando promover o desenvolvimento sustentável da atividade cafeeira em Aimorés-MG, o Instituto Terra prestou assessoria técnica a pequenos produtores do município para incentivar a adoção de práticas agroecológicas de produção e viabilizar a adequação ambiental das unidades atendidas.
Desenvolvido em convênio com a Prefeitura Municipal de Aimorés, por meio do Departamento Municipal de Agricultura e Abastecimento, o projeto “Fortalecimento da Cafeicultura” teve execução no segundo semestre de 2013 e beneficiou 25 produtores.
Desde 2009 o Instituto Terra atua em parceria com a Prefeitura de Aimorés efetivando ações que objetivam o desenvolvimento sustentável do município, viabilizando assistência técnica ambiental em segmentos produtivos agroindustriais. Neste último projeto realizado, os produtores rurais beneficiados tiveram acesso a informações sobre poda, desbrota, adubação, controle de pragas e ervas daninhas, irrigação, colheita, beneficiamento e conservação do solo.
Além da assistência técnica por parte do Instituto Terra, o projeto permitiu efetivar outras parcerias com órgãos competentes na área para a realização de cursos e dias de campo com o objetivo de levar informações aos proprietários sobre a criação de associações e as possibilidades de crédito rural voltado para melhorias de infra-estrutura produtiva. Projetos para implantação de piquetes e de sistemas de irrigação também foram viabilizados em algumas unidades para favorecer o aumento da produtividade e da qualidade dos grãos produzidos.
É importante destacar que a variedade de café Conilon responde por aproximadamente 30% da produção nacional e se constitui na principal opção para os produtores do médio Rio Doce, principalmente em Aimorés-MG, devido às exigências de clima (variação de quente para temperaturas amenas) e precipitação anual (varia de 1200 mm a 1800 mm).
No entanto, Aimorés apresenta ainda uma região distinta em relação à altitude, temperatura e precipitação, como o distrito de Mata Fria, que tem altitude média de 900 metros, o que possibilita a cultura da variedade Arábica. Dessa forma, nos distritos de São José do Limoeiro, Macuco, Vala dos Fagundes e Alto Capim a variedade trabalhada pelo projeto foi a do café Arábica, enquanto nos distritos de Bugre, Tabaúna e Expedicionário Alício o destaque foi a variedade do café Conilon.
