Restoring the Atlantic Forest starts with a small action: collecting seeds. It is from this that the whole chain of ecosystem restoration unfolds – from the nursery to planting, from the regeneration of fauna to soil recovery, from the return of the forest to the transformation of communities. With this in mind, Instituto Terra is launching its new booklet on seed collection, with the aim of engaging more people in this collective work that begins in the countryside and reverberates throughout the Doce River Basin.
With accessible language and simplified technical content, the publication brings together guidelines, good practices and a complete step-by-step guide on how to participate in the collection of native seeds from the Atlantic Forest. It also explains the benefits of this activity for farmers, the environment and society as a whole.
The booklet also presents the species most frequently collected by Instituto Terra and shares the path taken by the seeds: from collection on partner properties to processing in the laboratory, through the production of seedlings in the nursery to planting in degraded areas – all with the direct support of the region’s communities.
This content is part of an initiative made possible by the Semente Call for Proposals, a platform run by the Minas Gerais Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPMG) in partnership with CeMAIS, which supports relevant socio-environmental projects in the state. Through this support, Instituto Terra is strengthening its work in 14 municipalities in the middle Rio Doce, where it already works with hundreds of native species and establishes links with producers in the region.
More than just informing, the booklet has a clear objective: to expand the collection network, arousing the interest of new properties in becoming partners of Instituto Terra and the Terra Doce program. By engaging the local population, it reinforces a virtuous cycle that connects traditional knowledge, science and restoration.
Collecting seeds is also a gesture of belonging. An invitation to participate in the regeneration of the territory and of a culture that values caring for the land, water and biodiversity.
