In the area of Ecosystem Restoration we recover soil, biodiversity and water resources.
The result of Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado’s dream of recovering the forest that existed on the family’s old farm, the work of ecosystem restoration began with the planting of native species in our Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) in Aimorés (MG). Since then, what was once degraded soil has become a living example of the rebirth of the Atlantic Forest.
More than replanting trees, restoring ecosystems means recreating the conditions for nature to function in balance again – with fertile soil, diverse fauna and living springs.
Our work seeks to restore the forest to its natural functions, adapting it to the challenges of the present and transforming the Terra Institute into a biodiversity hub for the entire region.
Our Ecosystem Restoration work has Zurich as its Master Sponsor.
Refloresta is Instituto Terra’s ecosystem restoration program. By planting native species from the Atlantic Forest, it recovers the soil, biodiversity and springs of our RPPN in Aimorés (MG).
In 2021, alongside Gilberto Gil, we launched the campaign of the same name, which not only celebrated the return of the forest, but also gave the name to our restoration program. The music video, directed by Ivi Roberg, brought the campaign’s message to life with images that reflect the strength and beauty of the rebirth of the Atlantic Forest.
