O Instituto Terra iniciou neste mês de março a formação de mais uma turma do Núcleo de Estudos em Restauração Ecossistêmica (NERE), que oferece capacitação em recuperação de áreas degradadas de Mata Atlântica e proteção de nascentes. O curso é voltado para técnicos agrícolas, agropecuários, ambientais e florestais recém-formados.
A nova turma conta com 18 alunos, formados por escolas agrotécnicas do Espírito Santo e de Minas Gerais, em sua maioria oriundos de municípios banhados pela Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Doce. O NERE conta com estrutura na própria RPPN Fazenda Bulcão, sede do Instituto Terra em Aimorés-MG, para alojar gratuitamente os estudantes durante o período do curso, que finaliza as aulas no mês de dezembro. Além de alojamento e alimentação, cada aluno recebe ainda uma ajuda de custo mensal durante o período de formação.
Durante o ano, os técnicos vão participar de aulas teóricas e práticas na área de restauração ambiental, de reflorestamento de Mata Atlântica e de proteção de nascentes, acompanhando os projetos desenvolvidos pelo Instituto Terra. O objetivo é que a partir do conhecimento adquirido, eles possam atuar como agentes de recuperação ecossistêmica, replicando um novo modelo de produção rural em propriedades e comunidades rurais, em especial as estabelecidas na região do Vale do Rio Doce.
A capacitação é oferecida pelo Instituto Terra desde 2005 e já formou 143 técnicos, sendo que desse total, a maioria está atuando em sua área de formação, em suas cidades de origem.
Em 2008, a iniciativa do curso garantiu ao Instituto Terra a conquista do Prêmio Ford Motor Company de Conservação Ambiental, na categoria Ciência e Formação de Recursos Humanos, pelo envolvimento com a comunidade e, sobretudo, pela proposta responsável de tornar o conhecimento científico acessível a pessoas do campo, que muitas vezes não têm acesso ao estudo formal.
Além disso, o Centro também contribui para o social, pois possibilita uma melhoria de qualidade de vida a muitos jovens da região que não têm perspectivas educacionais e profissionais. Natura, CST (ArcelorMittal Tubarão), Governo do Principado das Astúrias (da Espanha), CSN e Fundação Roberto Marinho são alguns dos parceiros que já patrocinaram o curso em anos anteriores.
